London fire: 58 presumed dead, say police

Laurie Berry | 19 June, 2017, 18:02

Father's Day cards were among the tributes left close to the tower on Sunday, as firefighters leaving the scene were greeted by cheers and applause from the local community.

The devastating fire erupted in the early hours of June 14 trapping several sleeping residents at the 24-storey Grenfell tower. Grief turned to outrage Friday amid reports that materials used in the building's renovation could have fueled the i.

While the blaze has prompted an outpouring of generosity, with many people donating provisions and clothes, it has also unleashed rage at the authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol of a deeply divided society.

"I must consider the fact that there may be others in the building who, for whatever reason have not been reported to us".

Police say at least 58 people are either confirmed or presumed dead, with the figure likely to rise in coming days. British media have reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior paneling on the 24-story tower in a renovation that was completed just past year. He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the public housing block that was devastated by a fire early Wednesday.

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton told BBC Radio 4's Today programme she could understand the "absolute frustration and misery" of people concerned about loved ones who had not yet been identified, but that it was critical to go through the process properly.

Cundy said police had now managed to get to the top of the tower and had undertaken a first visual search for victims, ahead of later painstaking searches.

Residents say they were ignored and want the government to take responsibility.

A second protest began later at Britain's Home Office, which oversees fire prevention and policing nationally.

He said: "I met people yesterday who had been given that £10".

Eve Allison, a Conservative who sits on Kensington and Chelsea Council, said the council has a duty of care to survivors of the fire.

He said the community in north Kensington, west London, was "frustrated and, yes, angry".

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard.

A lawyer for the family told CNN that Trevisan spoke with her parents before she died, telling them: "I am going to heaven". This relies on dental records, fingerprints and DNA when possible and also features like tattoos or scars.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II struck a mournful tone in an address to mark her official birthday Saturday, remarking not only on the blaze at the high-rise building but also on the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London.

British officials have announced a nationwide minute of silence to honor the victims on Monday morning.

King also said that there are around 4,000 tower blocks in the United Kingdom without automatic fire sprinkler protection systems in place.

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", she said in a message marking the event.

Asked repeatedly whether she had misread the public mood, May did not answer directly but said the focus was on providing support to the victims.

Anger boiled over on Friday as people stormed Kensington & Chelsea Town Hall.

Experts believe the new paneling, which contained insulation, helped spread the flames quickly up the outside of the public housing tower.

Building officials have not commented since the fire.

The tragedy has provoked a huge response from nearby communities.

More than 3 million pounds ($3.8 million) has been raised for the victims. Numerous displaced are living in churches and community centres.
