Portugal says 1 of its soldiers killed in Mali terror attack

Laurie Berry | 19 June, 2017, 17:58

At least two people are dead after an attack at a popular tourist resort near Mali's capital city, Bamako, by suspected jihadi terrorists Sunday.

'The first victim was a French-Gabonese citizen. "The situation is under control".

Authorities had said that security forces initially killed at least three assailants, and a fourth had escaped.

Police with four people rescued from the Le Campement Kangaba resort following an attack where gunmen stormed the resort in Dougourakoro, to the east of the capital Bamako, Mali.

In a later news conference, Traore said Malian forces fatally shot two of the attackers but the other two escaped and were being pursued.

Jihadis on Sunday afternoon attacked the hotel resort, yelling "Allah Akbar" and taking hostages.

"This was without doubt a terrorist attack", Security Minister Salif Traore told Radio France International.

He said it had been "incredibly emotional working in there", adding: "On Saturday I went in myself and went to the top floor". He said his priority is to identify and remove people who died in the building as quickly as possible.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. A devastating attack on the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako later that year left 20 dead - six Malians and 14 foreigners. The BBC reports both Malian troops and soldiers from France's Bakhane counter-terrorist force are now on the scene.

There were an unknown number of off-duty members of the UN Minusma multinational force stationed in Mali in the area at the time.

A tourist resort in Mali popular with top officials and foreigners is under attack, according to witnesses and journalists. "Westerners were fleeing the encampment while two plainclothes police exchanged fire..."

The Kangaba, located on the eastern edge of Bamako, boasts accommodation in hut-style rooms, as well as restaurants and swimming pools, according to its website.

The European Union Training Mission in Mali said in a tweet that they were aware of the attack and responding alongside Malian Security Forces.

The attack comes after the USA embassy's warning, who predicted attacks on westerners in Mali.

The French troops and the United Nations peace keeping mission - consisting of some 10 thousand men, including 290 Dutch soldiers - could not stop extremists attacking far beyond their traditional strongholds in the North.
