Theresa May 'welled up' in meeting with Grenfell families, says reverend

Kenny Thornton | 19 June, 2017, 13:45

Their ranks are expected to swell this weekend as MPs consult grassroots grandees about May's faltering response to the Grenfell Tower inferno in west London.

Called the Bellwin scheme, the fund was originally set up by DCLG to help authorities deal with the immediate costs following a disaster of emergency in their area that involves danger to life or property, such as heavy flooding.

I have heard horrifying stories from the fire brigade, from police and from victims themselves who were in that tower but also from other local residents, some of whom of course have not been able to go back to their homes either.

In an interview, the Prime Minister was questioned over whether there was a need for the Government to accept some responsibility for what had happened.

Mrs May us set to visit a hospital to see the injured later, the BBC said, but it is not clear if she will return to the scene. "Emergency services and the local community have been tremendous in their response".

"But can't we as a society just think, all of us, it's all very well putting our arms around people during the crisis but homelessness is rising, the housing crisis is getting worse and my point was quite a simple one".

Mrs May said the public inquiry into the fire will take place "as soon as possible" and insisted the Government had acted on previous warnings about tower block safety by a coroner.

USA opts out of G7 pledge stating Paris climate accord is 'irreversible'
Secretary of State John Kerry delivers farewell remarks to State Department employees at the State Department in Washington. But other world leaders say that would be impossible.

"There are thousands of tower blocks around our country", he said.

"The people concerned were still searching for loved ones".

"Something awful has happened", she answered. We don't want the government to kick this into the long grass'.

"Government is making money available, we are ensuring we are going to get to the bottom of what happened, we will ensure that people are rehoused, but we need to make sure that that actually happens".

People who are traumatised and grief-stricken, who have lost their homes and all their belongings or who are searching for missing relatives, are looking to the government and various agencies to help them at this terrible time. "I know that many people will be anxious and want to know how they can ensure they are safe living there with their families".

The Bishop of Kensington, Dr Graham Tomlin, who also attended the talks, said "strong words were said".

"This is an absolutely terrible fire that took place".
