Trump Confirms Being Investigated for Firing Ex-FBI Director Comey

Freda Brock | 19 June, 2017, 14:07

In a perplexing series of Friday-morning tweets, President Donald Trump appeared to confirm that he is under investigation by the FBI and levelled a scathing attack against the officials leading the inquiry.

Trump hammered off a second tweet Thursday, again calling the investigation a "WITCH HUNT".

US President Donald Trump is being investigated for possible obstruction of justice by the special counsel appointed to probe alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential polls, according to a media report.

In another early morning tweet, Trump said that despite months of investigation no proof has been presented of any collusion he may have had with the Kremlin.

A spokesperson for Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, issued a statement saying: "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

Trump admitted in an interview with NBC News' Lester Holt days after Comey's ousting on May 9 that the Russian Federation investigation influenced his decision to terminate him.

US Vice-President Mike Pence has hired a lawyer known for defending government officials in high-profile investigations to help him with probes into whether there were ties between the election campaign of President Donald Trump and Russian Federation.

Vice-President Mike Pence has hired an outside lawyer to handle his response to inquiries into possible ties between President Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

A representative for Trump's lawyer promptly reacted to the allegation.

Apparently, this major uptick in the investigation into Flynn, efforts at Russian sabotage and White House collusion and now the obstruction-of-justice element by Trump himself came days after then-FBI Director Jim Comey was sacked by Trump.

Trump's Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives who have charged the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest.

The Senate judiciary committee does plan to investigate whether there was any interference with the FBI investigations, and the panel's chairman, Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley, has not ruled out investigating obstruction of justice as part of the probe.

Comey said the notes contain his recollections that Trump asked for his loyalty when they met for a January dinner and then urged him during a private meeting in the Oval Office two weeks later to drop an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
