Trump lawyer denies president is a probe target

The President Is Not Under Investigation Trump Attorney Trump Attorney: The President Is Not Under Investigation

"Let me be clear - the president's not under investigation, as James Comey said in his testimony, that the president was not the target of investigation on three different occasions", Sekulow said.

President Donald TrumpĀ“s personal lawyer said on Sunday that Trump is not under investigation in the probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential race, a statement that appeared to contradict a comment Trump himself made on Twitter last week.

"The President has not been and is not under investigation" for obstruction of justice, he added, referring to press reports saying that special counsel Robert Mueller is also investigating Trump, Efe news reported.

Advisers have been forced to perform post-presidential cleanup in the wake of Trump's tweets and comments. The denial comes days after Trump appeared to confirm he is being investigated, sending a tweet complaining that he is the target of a "witch hunt".

On Friday, the president wrote the opposite on Twitter, saying: "I am being investigated for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director by the man who told me to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director!"

He blamed the confusion over Twitter's 140-character limit.

Speculation that President Donald Trump plans to remove the special investigator looking into Russia's meddling with the presidential election has been rampant. "We're a nation of laws that apply equally to everyone, a lesson the president would be wise to learn", she said.

Several White House officials and Trump associates insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the president's views of the unfolding investigation.

Trump has hinted that he may have taped conversations with Comey - in which the ex-FBI chief says the president pressured him for his loyalty and on the Russian Federation investigation while also urging him to drop a probe into former national security advisor Michael Flynn. Asked about the possibility that an investigation has developed and the president just doesn't know, Sekulow says, "I can't read people's minds".

Kovind became Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court in 1978 and practiced law for about 16 years until 1993. The Opposition had said they would announce their candidates only after the ruling party had picked theirs.

"I can't imagine a scenario where the president would not be aware of it", Sekulow said on CBS.

The US Justice Department has assigned Mueller to investigate the Russian meddling allegations.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel following Comey's ouster in early May. The result was that Rosenstein, a career prosecutor with no affiliation to Trump, unilaterally made a decision to appoint a special counsel and hired Mueller.

They said previous presidents would make sure to have the White House counsel's office and their personal lawyers carefully review any comments about such an investigation before making them.

They said Sekulow's denials were not so much a legal argument as an effort to fix the political damage from the apparent admission by Trump.

Sen. Marco Rubio says it's best for the country to let the FBI's investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 presidential election take its course, and the Florida Republican tells CNN's "State of the Union" that's what he'd advise President Donald Trump.
