Amnesty urges donors to give more to South Sudan refugees

Kenny Thornton | 21 June, 2017, 23:48

In 2016 there were 40.3 million internally displaced persons around the world, far overshadowing the 25.3 million refugees.

Grandi said the USA government gave $1.5 billion to the UN refugee agency previous year - more than any other nation.

Other countries with large numbers of Myanmar refugees included Thailand (102,600), Malaysia (87,000), and India (15,600), said the report. A recent report even showed that NGO anti-smuggling efforts actually worsened the situation for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean.

The number of South Sudanese refugees has risen to about 1.9 million this year, with a similar number internally displaced, said the United Nations refugee agency.

Most of those fleeing from South Sudan have gone to neighboring Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic.

In that past 12 months, Uganda has taken in more refugees than any other country in the world.

In each of the past five years, annual increases to the global total displacement have been in the millions. "I'd rather get shot in South Sudan than starve in Uganda", one refugee told MSF staff. Teams have also heard stories of refugees who returned to South Sudan because of a lack of food in Uganda, only to be killed.

Slightly fewer than 190,000 refugees were accepted for resettlement in 37 countries.

With a record 65.6 million people a year ago forcibly uprooted from their homes by violence and persecution, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on June 20 called on the global community to provide support and solidarity. But it's also a moment to recognize those communities and people around the world who receive refugees and the internally displaced in their midst, offering them a safe haven, and welcoming them in their schools, their workplaces and their societies.

"Thrown out of the secure environments of their homes and communities, they are open to hunger, physical and sexual abuse, and undignifying conditions, " he said. "It speaks louder than ever to the need for solidarity and common goal in preventing and resolving crises, and ensuring together that the world's refugees, internally displaced and asylum-seekers are properly protected and cared for while solutions are pursued". Pakistan is second. Among the top ten host nations only one is a high-income country: Germany, at number 8 on the list, hosting 669,500 refugees and asylum seekers.

"Some survived, later calling people they knew on the first boat to say they had been rescued by the Libyans".

The Horn of Africa country now is ranked as the second most refugee-friendly African country only behind Uganda. There were 1.4 million refugees in Pakistan and 1 million in Lebanon.

The UN report said its findings added up to "an enormous human cost of war and persecution globally".

"It will focus on protecting the most vulnerable, including women and children and people with disabilities", Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Tuesday.

"This year, the World Refugee Day was held under the theme "#WithRefugees", in a bid to emphasise and celebrate the importance of inclusion.
