Reaction To Senate GOP's Health Care Bill Was Quick And Critical

Kenny Thornton | 23 June, 2017, 06:17

After weeks of closed-door meetings that angered Democrats and some Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell planned to release the proposal Thursday. The package represents McConnell's attempt to quell criticism by party moderates and conservatives and win the support he needs in a vote he hopes to stage next week. They said GOP characterisations of the law as failing are wrong and claimed the Republican plan would boot millions off coverage and leave others facing higher out-of-pocket costs. The House bill called for creating tax credits based largely on age, but adding abortion restrictions to these credits could have run afoul of Senate rules governing the bill.

The Senate bill includes a slower phase-out of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion than the House version and provides more generous tax credits for lower-income people.

Trump says at the start of a White House event on technology he is hopeful Congress will get something done on health care "with heart".

Susan Collins of ME said it was "too soon" to judge the bill and she has some concerns about cuts to Medicaid after 2025 and defunding of Planner Parenthood.

Those similarities could make it easier for Republicans in the Senate and House when they begin negotiations on one, unified bill that would head to the President's desk.

The bill would repeal Obamacare's individual mandate, drastically cut back federal support of Medicaid, and eliminate Obamacare's taxes on the wealthy, insurers and others. Almost 70 percent of America's elderly - most of whom worked hard to support families and pay taxes all their lives - can afford to live in nursing homes because of Medicaid. "I'm sure the Russians have been able to hack in and gotten most of it".

While that works for picks for teams picking in the top 10, that advantage appears to disappear for teams picking No. 11 or later. Or, the team could try to figure out a deal that would get George to Los Angeles this summer.

Former President Barack Obama, who made passing the A.C.A. the centerpiece of his first term in office, wrote on Facebook that the Senate bill "is not a health care bill" at all, but rather "a massive transfer of wealth from middle-class and poor families to the richest people in America".

Republicans in the Senate on Thursday unveiled their plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act - also known as Obamacare. Republican senators from states that expanded Medicaid, such as Ohio's Rob Portman, want to extend that phase-out to seven years.

With a third of the Senate coming up for re-election in 2018, many will have to weigh the state-wide implications before voting for the bill.

The Cadillac tax, which applies to high-cost health insurance plans, would be delayed until 2026 in both the Senate and House bills. Susan Collins of ME, the Senate GOP's most liberal member, "has a number of concerns", according to her spokeswoman. "And small tweaks over the course of the next couple weeks, under the guise of making these bills easier to stomach, can not change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation", he said.

States would have more flexibility in determining the essential health benefits that all insurance companies must provide, such as prescription drug coverage, preventive health screenings, and coverage of mental health services.

Susan Collins of ME said it was "too soon" to decide on whether she would vote for the bill.
