Dennis Rodman Thinks He Helped Broker Otto Warmbier's Release

Kenny Thornton | 25 June, 2017, 02:20

The North Korean government has denied mistreating U.S. student Otto Warmbier, who fell into a coma while being held in prison in the communist state.

A United States student released by North Korea to the U.S. in a coma was a victim of the "strategic patience" policy of former President Barack Obama, who never requested his release, says Pyongyang.

"The terrible torturous mistreatment our son experienced at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today", reads a statement issued by Warmbier's family after his death.

Warmbier died Monday of severe brain damage, which doctors said was likely due to cardiopulmonary arrest. Through statements on KCNA, North Korea said it dealt with him according to its domestic laws and global standards.

The dictatorship denied torturing 22-year-old Otto Warmbier, who had been serving hard labour in North Korea after being accused of stealing a propaganda sign from a hotel.

Medical tests did not show what precipitated his injuries, but also found no evidence of the botulism infection that North Korea claimed was the cause of his coma.

Vagonis, who dated Warmbier for more than a year before he left for North Korea, recalled how the two met at a party at Warmbier's apartment, where she noticed his "insane" tie collection.

Inside the arts center, some of the personal items Warmbier took to North Korea were on display: a wallet, a University of Virginia notebook and the cream-colored linen blazer he wore there, CNN says. "At least I know China tried!"

"On behalf of the entire State Department and the United States government, I extend my condolences to the Warmbier family, and offer my prayers as they enter a time of grief no parent should ever know". USA doctors, however, said he apparently suffered "respiratory distress", and the oxygen supply to the brain was cut off.

Former professional basketball player Dennis Rodman spoke out in an exclusive interview with "GMA" co-anchor Michael Strahan about his recent trip to North Korea.

The casket of Otto Warmbier is carried from Wyoming High School after his funeral, Thursday, June 22, 2017, in Wyoming, Ohio.

There may be no good options in dealing with North Korea; we have almost 30,000 American troops stationed just miles away from the Demilitarized Zone, and millions of South Koreans could be killed in an attack. "They said they understood".

When Strahan asked Rodman about his friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - whom Rodman has called "a friend for life" - and how the basketball star could maintain that relationship in the face of Warmbier's treatment, Rodman was initially cagey. I was just so happy.

Refuting these accusations, an unnamed spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry told KCNA that painting such a defamatory portrait of North Korea will only lead the country to harshen treatment for foreign detainees in the future.
