Republicans unveil Senate health bill, but lack votes to pass it

Francis Olson | 25 June, 2017, 22:59

Cathy Infield, an Independence resident with developmental disabilities who spoke with help from an electronic device, relies on in-home care provided through Medicaid and said the cuts could mean she'd need to live in an institution. "We should not be voting on this next week", he said on NBC's "Meet the Press".

By "death panels", Hillary Clinton was referring to a line of argument that some Republicans had adopted in 2009 when they attacked former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act (ACA). His company was not one of the 10 that wrote to the Senate leaders, but he said Friday that he was also opposed to the bill.

On Thursday, Senate Republicans released their plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, titled the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017.

Asked about the bill's impact on Medicaid insurance coverage for lower-income Iowans, Ernst said, "I wouldn't say they are losing it".

Nearly 2.9 million Pennsylvanians are on Medicaid, or almost 1 in 4 Pennsylvanians, and about 1 million more than a decade ago, according to state figures.

"No amount of 11th hour reality-denying or buck-passing by Democrats is going to change the fact that more Americans are going to get hurt unless we do something", he said.

The ad blitz is "an opportunity to show that groups aligned with Trump's base are ready to go to bat for the president", Politico reports, citing an unnamed source at America First Policies.

Some Republican governors who agreed to the Medicaid expansion have voiced concerns to the Senate and President Donald Trump's administration, such as Ohio Gov. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had the bill drafted in strict secrecy and hopes to ram it through as early as next week.

Thibodeau has enough young players in Minnesota and wanted a veteran like he had during his successful run coaching the Bulls. As expected, the first overall pick of this year's NBA Draft is University of Washington's freshman guard Markelle Fultz .

"There are provisions in this draft that represent an improvement to our current healthcare system but it does not appear this draft as written will accomplish the most important promise that we made to Americans: to repeal Obamacare and lower their healthcare costs", the quartet continued in their statement.

"Sen. Collins will carefully review the text of the Senate health care bill this week and into the weekend". The House version gave states the option of no longer requiring that people with pre-existing conditions get coverage at the same rates, and the Senate bill omits that. The healthy people end up subsidizing the high medical bills of the sick people - and also purchase protection against financial ruin should they become one of the sick people themselves. Both propose deep cuts in federal Medicaid funding that would force states to either raise state taxes or drastically reduce health care programs for poor, elderly, disabled and pregnant citizens. Two moderate senators, Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska, and Susan Collins, of ME, are the most likely to oppose the bill, which means one more could kill it outright.

"I believe that the bill that the Senate will vote on, assuming they get to that point, will have some sort of mechanism to cause participation in it", said former GOP Senate staffer Rodney Whitlock.

I was not your U.S. Senator when the Senate passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010 but I will be the first to admit that the process wasn't flawless and improvements to the law are needed.

Allen said the council is also amenable to people losing their tax credit altogether if they don't maintain continuous coverage.

McConnell wants to push the package through the Senate next week, and will succeed if he can limit defections to two of the chamber's 52 Republicans. Or about "moderate Republicans" who will vote against it. He said that the legislation will need "a little negotiation, but it's going to be very good".

The Senate bill has the same shortcomings as the bill the House passed in May.
