Accident in NY subway: injured more than 30 people

Freda Brock | 28 June, 2017, 16:05

The accident occurred about 10 a.m. local time on route A of the NY subway with a train going South. Passengers interviewed by local TV stations described the train vibrating wildly and bucking as it went off the rails.

Two cars on a southbound A train derailed at the West 125th Street station and hit a wall around 9:45 a.m. after its emergency brakes unexpectedly deployed, the MTA said.

Crews are inspecting "every inch of rail" to ensure that every replacement part "is properly stored and secured", MTA officials said, adding that the investigation is ongoing. Lhota said the emergency braking system on the train triggered, but it wasn't immediately clear why. "People were falling", said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

The fire and police departments conducted a joint operation - involving 300 responders - in order to round up the passengers and bring them above ground, Nigro said.

Thirty-four people were injured. "Customers should never leave a train on their own - it's risky and potentially deadly and it requires us to shut down entire lines and delay thousands of other customers because of the safety hazard it presents", MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.

The New York City subway system has been hampered by aging infrastructure (leading to signal failures and power outages) and equipment, as well as surging numbers of riders for years, but the rush-hour delays have been especially ludicrous this summer. "It was enough to scare the heck out of us and for me to think I could die in this train", Kopp said. Lhota said the smoke was caused by sparks and the garbage and sanitation along the tracks.

Another passenger tweeted: 'Just got evacuated from a smoke filled train in probably the most terrifying 15 minutes of my NYC life. Pictures and video posted online showed passengers evacuating through darkened subway tunnels.

Commuter railroads have also had problems recently. The accident resulted in delays and suspensions across the subway system, and officials were not sure when full service would be restored.
