Overall, the majority of Australians still identify as being under the Christian denomination (Anglican, Catholic or otherwise) but for the first time, "no religion" is the single most popular choice for Australians.

At the national level, the country is at a diversity "tipping point", with nearly half of the population either born overseas or having a parent who did not have an Australian passport. The pulse learned there are 664,473 additional people aged 65 and over since 2011.

There are more people in Australia than previously believed and population growth remains solid.

In a statement released on Tuesday, AFA president Kylie Sturgess said that the organization is hopeful that Australian politicians will see the population that marked "no religion" as a serious force in the country's political landscape.

Its population of 4.5 million is now within striking distance of regaining its mantle from Sydney as the country's most populated city.

"One of the things that stood out for me was that the ACT was the second-least religious place in Australia, only Tasmania have a higher proportion of people reporting having "no religion"," she said. Five years ago it was 25 per cent and in the 1960s it was less than one per cent. Australians are now less religious, more culturally diverse, more educated and older than ever before.

NSW still holds the crown as Australia's most populous state with 7.5 million people, but Melbourne is slowly becoming Australia's most populous city.

The latest census indicates that the number of people ticking "no religion" has risen to 29.6 percent, almost double 2001's 16 percent, while the portion of the country identifying as Catholic dropped from 25.3 percent to 22.6 percent.

The median age of people in same-sex couples was 40 years, which lower than heterosexual people in a couple at 48 years.

The census also showed that the nation's median weekly income had increased from 577 Australian dollars (438 US dollars) in 2011 to 662 Australian dollars (502 dollars) in 2016.

England and New Zealand are still the most common countries of birth after Australia.

Sydney's population grew by about 1,656 every week since 2011, but Melbs saw 1,859 newbies each week and is predicted to take the number one spot.

The 2016 census was the first conducted under new rules that allow the Bureau of Statistics to retain names and dates of birth for up to four years and to use them to create "linkage keys" that can be connected to other databases.

The great Australia dream of owning your own home is still alive despite the various problems plaguing housing affordability, new Census data shows.
