The entire complex will be covered with almost 1 million plants and 40,000 trees, enough vegetation to absorb nearly 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants each year.
This week, construction began on the sustainable, carbon-negative city, which was commissioned by the Liuzhou Municipal Bureau of Urban Planning, designed by Italian architect Stefano Boeri, who definitely specializes in forest-styled developments.
The attractive city that will be rich in biodiversity and extremely environment friendly will be able to accommodate 30,000 people.
It will be connected to the outside world via an electric rail line. It will run on renewable energy sources including solar energy and geothermal.
Not only does the vegetation improve the lives of its human inhabitants, by providing them with cleaner air, cooler temperatures and natural noise barriers, but it also benefits the local ecosystem. The completion of the Forest City project is expected to be before the end of 2020, and the green city design is a first that will be looked up to as a model for any other country following this path.
China's problem with pollution is well documented - smog is the cause for almost one-third of deaths in China - so the new city may be a wave of helping reduce pollution in the country.
In fact, there will be a grand total of 40,000 trees and nearly 1,000,000 plants of 100 species, sprawling across the architecture in the Liuzhou Forest City when it is completed. Architetti and his team develop green projects around the globe. This city has the highest rate of air pollution in China. This could generate energy for the city and enhance the air quality. Liuzhou is not only the city that plans to construct a forest city but also in Nanjing, in which Architetti is assigned to design two forest towers similar in Milan. The towers combined have 900 trees on the balconies and over 2,000 plants on the roof. The first Chinese forest city will also have two schools, and a hospital constructed on the vast area and is hopeful to be operational in less than three years from its date of beginning.
