The Type 055 appears akin to the US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, which debuted in the 1980s and carry 96 missiles each, military analyst Kyle Mizokami wrote past year in Popular Mechanics.

"It is the symbol of the navy to achieve strategic transformation development", the People's Liberation Army Navy website said.

China launched the first 10,000-tonne Type 055 destroyer which entered the water at the Shanghai's Jiangnan Shipyard on Wednesday morning, said a release.

It is the first of China's new generation of destroyers. The destroyer is equipped with new air defence, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons.

The new destroyer is in addition to two aircraft carriers that China intends to deploy, which is being seen as them competing with the United States and India in the Indian Ocean.

Perhaps more importantly, it will form the backbone of China's "maritime anti-missile system together with 052D destroyer", the Global Times quoted one Chinese analyst as saying.

Rand Paul Says Trump Open to His Health Care Ideas
Vice President Mike Pence will also host four senators Tuesday night for dinner at the Naval Observatory: Sens. Senator McConnell had been pushing for a vote ahead of the July 4 recess that starts at the end of the week.

It is believed to be of the 055 type.

Experts say it could also play a key role in protecting China's nuclear missile submarines in the disputed South China Sea.

China claims nearly all the South China Sea that is believed to have huge deposits of oil and gas but other countries such as Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims to the sea.

Beijing has also long nurtured resentment against Japan over its past invasion of China, and their dispute over a group of tiny, uninhabited islands in the East China Sea has at times threatened to break out into open confrontation.

China has been producing warships at a rapid pace thus modernising its navy and boosting its armed forces.
