New Jersey's attempts to legalize sports betting despite longstanding federal law will faceSupreme Court scrutiny next term, the justices said Tuesday.
If New Jersey's appeal is successful, it could lead a wave of states to pass laws legalizing sports wagering, or force Congress to reconsider its current federal gambling laws.
The top U.S. court will hear arguments on whether sports betting should be legalised in New Jersey, and by extension elsewhere in the United States, in October.
New Jersey is seeking to overturn a 1992 law prohibiting state-sponsored sports betting.
The Supreme Court will now hear the case to determine if it's lawful for a company to deny services to a same-sex couple on the basis of religious beliefs. Earlier this year, National Football League owners allowed the Oakland Raiders to relocate to Las Vegas, a move that New Jersey gambling advocates and industry observers saw as a "symbolic breakthrough" for the push to legalize sports betting. The Supreme Court has taken a case that exemplifies a number of recent decisions by business owners to refuse services for homosexual couples getting married.
But Kennedy, who wrote the court's opinion upholding same-sex marriages, has also joined the court's conservatives in upholding religious exemptions.
