Danish shipping conglomerate AP Moller Maersk has confirmed that it's IT infrastructure has been subject to a major cyber-attack affecting several business units around the world.
"Right now, at this hour, we're not able to take new orders", Maersk Line Chief Commercial Officer Vincent Clerc said in a telephone interview.
Due to limited access to some of its computer systems, Maersk also has problems processing orders taken just before the breakdown, he said.
Denmark's A. P. Moller Maersk said it had IT systems down across multiple sites and select business units.
Meanwhile, the Government today said it has initiated proactive measures and is keeping a close vigil on the ransomware attack that has hit Europe, maintaining that there is no large-scale impact on India yet.
India's shipping ministry said meanwhile a terminal run by Maersk at the Mumbai port, the largest in India, was also affected.
NewYork, June28:The fallout from cyberattacks that disrupted computers across Europe and the US continued to cause problems for the world's largest shipping firm Wednesday as A.P. Moller-Maersk AMKBY 0.41% reported that a number of its port operations remain affected.
Maersk and MSC are the world's top two container shipping lines. "We have two terminals, so instead of normal computerised processes we are using manual processes", spokesman for APM Terminals in Rotterdam, Tom Boyd, said.
Maersk said it has contained the issue and is working on a technical recovery plan with its IT-partners and global cybersecurity agencies.
Operations at JNPT's GTI were impacted on Tuesday night as a fallout of the global ransomware attack, which crippled some central banks and many large corporations in Europe. APM Terminals operates 76 port and terminal facilities in 59 countries around the globe.
However, in a digital push Maersk says it is committed to automating its systems to drive efficiency and cut costs, although there is still a huge amount of paperwork slowing down the handling and tracking of containers. "But we have made alternative arrangements", Mr Diggikar said.
Global steel and mining company EVRAZ also said it had been a target of a hacker attack.
Additionally, the company's ships are also able to sail and their crews can communicate safely with the outside world. "They are trying to work manually", a senior JNPT official had said.
