White House press secretary Sean Spicer admitted during a Fox News interview Friday morning that President Donald Trump's initial tweet about having "tapes" of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey was meant to influence Comey's testimony.

"He's very, very good friends with Comey, which is bothersome", Trump told Fox News. He added: "The people that have been hired are all Hillary Clinton supporters". "To every veteran who is here with us today, I just want to say two very simple words: Thank you".

Trump has privately told aides that the threat of the existence of tapes forced Comey to tell the truth in his recent testimony, a source familiar with the situation said.

"Some of them worked for Hillary Clinton", Trump said.

The president closed on a more positive note, saying, "Robert Mueller's an honorable man, and hopefully he'll come up with an honorable solution".

Standing next to First Lady Melania Trump, the President suggested that reports of surveillance under other administrations could have kept the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director guessing as to whether there was evidence of their conversations.

Trump, according to his advisers, had become enormously frustrated that Comey would not say so publicly.

Food company Mondelez International also said its staff in different regions were experiencing technical problems. Although no one knows yet who's behind the attack, some are comparing it to the WannaCry cyberattacks from May.

Mr Comey also said that Mr Trump asked him for "loyalty" - which Mr Trump emphatically denies.

Allegations of ties to Russian Federation have cast a shadow over Trump's first five months in office, distracting from attempts by his fellow Republicans in Congress to overhaul the U.S. healthcare and tax systems.

On Thursday, Mr Trump also made it clear that he had not made secret recordings of his conversations with Mr Comey, despite an earlier hint to the contrary. But when he found out that I, you know, that there may be tapes out there, whether it's government tapes or anything else, and who knows, I think his story may have changed. I think his story may have changed and you'll have to look into that because then he'll have to tell what actually took place at the events.

"And I think that having Director Comey come out and admit under oath and testimony proves that the president was right", he continued.

On an unrelated note, when asked about reports of a switch-up in the White House communications department that could see him stepping away from the briefing podium and into a more administrative role, Spicer said, "I wouldn't read everything that you see in some of the Washington-based publications".

In special elections for House seats vacated by Republicans who wound up in Trump's Cabinet, Democrats have gone 0-for-4, losing races in Georgia, Montana, South Carolina and Kansas.
