Residents of a northern Arizona town that has been evacuated say they struggled to leave behind their homes.

Firefighters battled high winds as they fought a fire that has grown to 72 square miles (184 square kilometers) and burned 13 homes - larger than any other fire in the country now, state emergency managers said.

More than 1,500 people in that area have been evacuated due to fires throughout the state.

Ducey said his office is receiving constant updates from state fire officials.

"A significant area of thin density smoke attributed to a number of wildfires over the Western and Southwestern United States could be seen this morning stretching from Wyoming southward over a good portion of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico".

As for the wildfires in California, about 10 percent of the blaze scorching up Riverside County-80 miles from Los Angeles-has been contained, according to local reports.

Crews in California, meanwhile, had to deal with two new powerful and fast-growing fires, and Arizona firefighters had to ground aircraft because of unauthorised drones over a blaze near Flagstaff.
