Few answers on travel ban as launch deadline looms

Who can get around the travel ban? State AG disappointed as Sea-Tac prepares to enforce travel ban

The Supreme Court's decision to allow part of President Donald Trump's travel ban to go forward is likely to have only a minimal impact on refugees, for now.

The US Supreme Court delivered a victory this Monday to President Donald Trump approving his provisional ban on entering the United States for travelers from six Muslim countries and for people who do not have strong ties with the United States, adding that they will decide on the legality of that order this autumn.

The court agreed to review both cases and said it would hear arguments in October, noting that the government had not asked it to act faster. In the meantime, the court said Monday that Trump's ban on visitors from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen can be enforced if those visitors lack a "credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States". If the relationship is with a person, it must be a close familial relationship.

"We remain deeply troubled by the human consequences of the revised executive order on refugee admissions and the travel ban", Bishop Joe S. Vasquez of Austin, Texas, said in March. But that may have minimal effect for now.

Trump has legitimate cause to look closely at how the USA screens travelers and refugees to determine whether the system keeps the country safe or has deficiencies.

John Keller, executive director of the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, said there's a lot of confusion around the "bona fide relationship" provision. The court meeting in October will weigh the president's legal authority to apply national security restrictions against protecting individuals from discrimination based on religious beliefs or place of origin.

Baby Driver review: Dir. Edgar Wright (2017)
A vehicle accident as a child killed both his parents, and left him with permanent tinnitus, which he blocks out using music. The film expands from 2,606 to 3,150 locations on Wednesday night.

Arrivals from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen were down by almost half in March and April from a year ago, according to official data. He said it was needed to protect the USA from terrorists, but opponents said it was unfairly harsh and was meant to meet a Trump campaign promise to keep Muslims out of the United States.

The judges "essentially adopted a middle course" between the government's request to uphold Trump's order and the ACLU's appeals to stay the ban, he told AFP.

News 8 spoke with folks who support the ban and those who would like to see it gone completely. The GBTA recently forecast a $1.3 billion loss in overall travel-related expenditures in the USA this year due to the ban, as well as other policies like the proposed expanded laptop ban and other political factors like Brexit.

Iranians apply for US visas in neighboring countries because Washington and Tehran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 revolution. The officials said the new guidance might not delve into such specifics and leave consular officers with discretion to make their own determinations.

That's because Trump's order only sought to halt travelers from the six countries for 90 days, to give the administration time to review the screening procedures for those visa applicants.

"We see the 9-0 decision with zero dissensions as a slap in the face to those that would use the courts with a political agenda to undermine the security of USA citizens", Deputy Assistant to the President Sebastian Gorka told KTAR News 92.3 FM's Arizona's Morning News on Tuesday.
