Google News for desktop redesigned for a cleaner look, adds Story cards

Google News gets a much-needed redesign to cut down on clutter and confusion Google redesigns desktop version of Google News 'for everyone'

Google has given its news aggregation service a revamp to remove clutter on the page and give it a cleaner look for its desktop version.

"Every day people come to Google News for a trusted view of the world".

Google has dedicated the navigation column on the left to sections that can be customized. Users can jump quickly to news in sections like Sports or Entertainment, or those created by them and powered by their queries, such as "FIFA World Cup" or "Bollywood". These are the top headlines list, a local list, as well as a personalized "For You" part. It off offers the options, "Headlines, ' 'Local" and 'For You.' Upon signing in, the user can personalise the "Local" and "For You" tabs. In "For You", users can pinpoint niche interests and create their own mini news feed, whether it's following their favourite team, or news on cool gadgets and gizmos.

Google News has received a massive redesign on the web that focusses on readability and simplified navigation.

While this update is now only available to readers in America, this will roll out to other countries soon. The first view offers a quick glance into a story. All of the new tools Google added in recent years, including real-time coverage, fact checks and support for videos, remain in place.

Capito says she can't support GOP health care bill
The bill would cut taxes, reduce the deficit and phase out the Medicaid expansion implemented by Barack Obama's health law. The bill also preserves some entitlements, scaring off Cruz and Paul who want a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act .

Once clicked, the cards can provide more information about the story they're linking to.

Lastly, Settings has also been revamped and is now a more centralized location to add custom sections and edit existing ones. Gone, too, are most of the longer snippets of text that featured prominently in the old design, as well as the share buttons for Facebook, Twitter and (gasp!) Google+ that would fade in when you hovered over a story (these have been replaced by a modern share button). In an article on a popular search engine website, she writes, "This is what happens when Google rolls out large-scale changes to its search algorithms, and what is in these rollouts has been the topic of many articles, tweets and Facebook posts over the years".

Another change that you may notice if you used Google News before is that articles include titles only in the new interface.

Paka notes that Google is "rolling out this update globally in the coming days", (with the new view now live, at least for me, in Australia), and hopes "the new design enables you to easily access quality journalism, bolstered with meaningful insights and comprehensive coverage".
