Justices to review New Jersey bid for legal sports betting

NJ sports betting Justices to review New Jersey bid for legal sports betting

Nevada and a handful of other states have held a monopoly in legal sports betting since the days of Bugsy Siegel, but New Jersey and Governor Chris Christie now want in on the action.

The justices said Monday they will consider whether a baker who objects to same-sex marriage on religious grounds can refuse to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. The casino industry, after a period of job losses and closings, has lately been doing better. New Jersey had lost every step of the way in this legal battle and was considered an underdog to have its case heard by the SCOTUS.

In November 2011, New Jersey voters passed a statewide referendum by almost a 2-1 margin in support of legal sports betting throughout the state.

RUSADA was suspended in 2015 when its staff was accused of helping to cover up drug use, but will now have wide-ranging authority over testing.

At issue in the litigation is the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), a federal law that prohibits sports betting in all states except Nevada, Oregon, Montana, and Delaware.

The court in January had delayed a ruling on the case, saying it first wanted to hear what President Donald Trump had to say on the issue.

Highlighting its sensitivity, the issue was not listed on the Cabinet's agenda and no official statement on the decision was made. At the Western Wall in Jerusalem , Judaism's holiest site, women and men pray in sharply divided separate sections.

"I applaud the Supreme Court for taking on this case and potentially resolving a long history of hypocrisy and unfairness in federal law", Pallone said in a statement. But a special deal worked out three decades ago outlawed sports betting in all but four states - preventing New Jersey from the benefits those four states enjoy. New Jersey voters passed a non-binding referendum to allow sports betting in 2011.

The NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and the NCAA all oppose the New Jersey law and urged the Supreme Court to deny review in the case.

Despite its unwholesome connotations, and unquestioned illegality, friendly wagers over rival teams are seen to be as harmless as going five miles per hour over the speed limit on the interstate.

Congress gave New Jersey a one-time opportunity to become the fifth state before the ban was enacted, but the state failed to pass a sports betting law in the required time window.

This month, the American Gaming Association announced the creation of a coalition involving organizations of attorneys general and police, policymakers and others to advocate for the repeal of the ban that the industry says has fueled the illegal sports betting market. Aside from straight betting on games, Fantasy Sports is what's helping to keep it the most popular US sport.
