Kushner, Greenblatt met with family of murdered Border Policewoman in Israel

Unnamed White House officials cited by several news sources have reiterated that an agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians is a priority for the Trump administration.

Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and senior adviser, and Jason Greenblatt, his lead global negotiator, will meet with leaders from both sides after accompanying Trump on his visit to the region last month.

Jason Greenblatt, the USA special representative for worldwide negotiations, arrived in Israel on Monday for preliminary discussions in Jerusalem and Ramallah, and will remain for follow-up talks after Kushner has left, Reuters reported.

"After decades, I have the privilege to be the prime minister who is building a new community in Judea and Samaria", Netanyahu tweeted.

"They're going to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and senior officials on his team, they're going to meet with President Abbas and officials on his team later in the week and I think part of it is how to make incremental change that results in a lasting peace", he told reporters. Tuesday's ground-clearing work for the settlement to be called Amichai was in preparation for the installation of mobile homes to house about 300 settlers evicted from Amona. The settlements are illegal under global law and are seen as a major obstacle to peace sought by the Palestinians and the worldwide community.

Those talks in large part collapsed after Israel ignored United States pressure and announced the building of thousands of new homes in existing settlement blocs.

Greenblatt is to be joined by Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday.

Later Tuesday, the Israeli military said a Palestinian tried to stab soldiers on duty in the West Bank who responded by opening fire, killing him.

The worldwide community regards all Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories to be illegal and a major obstacle to Middle East peace.

The visits by Greenblatt and Kushner are the first major peace push by the White House since Trump visited the region last month.

An IEC spokeswoman confirmed a cutback had begun, in line with the West Bank-based Palestinian government's decision to cover only 70% of the monthly cost of Israeli electricity supplies to the Gaza Strip. But ahead of his last election victory in 2015, he promised there would never be a Palestinian state on his watch, a remark seen as an attempt to shore up support on the right. Israel also cites biblical, historical and security interests to defend settlements.
