"The WannaCry attack and now Petya clearly demonstrate that hackers do not discriminate which type of business they are targeting".
Unlike WannaCry, Petya basically locks down computer's hard drive as well as individual files stored in it.
SingCERT advised all users and companies with these affected systems to ensure they are fully patched, antivirus software is updated with the latest malware definitions and perform file backups and store them offline in case they need to restore their systems following an online attack.
Quoting Nicholas Weaver, a security researcher at the International Computer Science Institute, the report stated that Petya appears to be engineered to be destructive, and masquerades as a ransomware strain.
SingCERT said the latest ransomware is based on the EternalBlue exploit, which was also used for WannaCry. Microsoft has released patches for these exploits since March, so it is not known if these were insufficient to block the infection or if the affected institutions did not install the patches. Company officials said the incident is under investigation.

Meanwhile, systems at the major lender Oschadbank still appeared crippled, while a delivery service and energy supplier said they were also facing some difficulties.
The Petya virus has also attacked the Ukrainian government, Auchan Hypermarkets, Privatbank and telecommunication operators, the Group-IB company said. In a statement, it said that "in connection with the cyber attack, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant website is not working". Computers running the most recent update of Microsoft's software should be safe from the attack.
The fight against cyberattacks has sparked exponential growth in global protection spending, with the cyber security market estimated at $120 billion this year, more than 30 times its size just over a decade ago.
