Cyber attacks: Hackers strike across Europe, sparking widespread disruption Maersk hit by cyber attack
Laurie Berry | 28 June, 2017, 17:31

The first reports of disruption emerged from Russian Federation and Ukraine, with Ukraine's Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman describing the attacks on his country as "unprecedented". Danish shipping and logistics company Maersk has reported that its systems are down across multiple sites and businesses. According to some reports, the American law firm, DLA Piper, and the pharmaceutical giant, Merck, were hit as well.

"The WannaCry attack and now Petya clearly demonstrate that hackers do not discriminate which type of business they are targeting".

Unlike WannaCry, Petya basically locks down computer's hard drive as well as individual files stored in it.

SingCERT advised all users and companies with these affected systems to ensure they are fully patched, antivirus software is updated with the latest malware definitions and perform file backups and store them offline in case they need to restore their systems following an online attack.

Quoting Nicholas Weaver, a security researcher at the International Computer Science Institute, the report stated that Petya appears to be engineered to be destructive, and masquerades as a ransomware strain.

SingCERT said the latest ransomware is based on the EternalBlue exploit, which was also used for WannaCry. Microsoft has released patches for these exploits since March, so it is not known if these were insufficient to block the infection or if the affected institutions did not install the patches. Company officials said the incident is under investigation.

The MTA also says crews will be working throughout the night to try to restore normal service by Wednesday morning's commute. The authority has confirmed damage to tracks, switches and the adjacent tunnel wall, all of which takes time to fix .

The bedeviling onslaught yesterday was also being referred to as ransomware by United States software titan Microsoft and security specialists.

Spokesman Scott McConnell said DHS is "coordinating with our worldwide and domestic cyber partners. We stand ready to support any requests for assistance".

Europol said it is investigating the attack as well.

Meanwhile, systems at the major lender Oschadbank still appeared crippled, while a delivery service and energy supplier said they were also facing some difficulties.

The Petya virus has also attacked the Ukrainian government, Auchan Hypermarkets, Privatbank and telecommunication operators, the Group-IB company said. In a statement, it said that "in connection with the cyber attack, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant website is not working". Computers running the most recent update of Microsoft's software should be safe from the attack.

The fight against cyberattacks has sparked exponential growth in global protection spending, with the cyber security market estimated at $120 billion this year, more than 30 times its size just over a decade ago.
