Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were reportedly present at Shayrat before April's sarin gas attack, raising questions about Iran's involvement in Syria chemical weapons program.

Two events in the past month -- the shooting down by a USA plane of a Syrian Su-22 and the use of ballistic missiles by Iran against ISIS targets - are evidence of a scramble in eastern Syria that's been gathering pace since the beginning of the year.

The White House said that if Mr Assad conducted another chemical weapons attack, "he and his military will pay a heavy price".

The US statements are unacceptable, he said, adding, "This complicates the negotiation process, negatively affects the efforts being made in Astana and Geneva".

Days after that strike on a rebel-held town, the United States launched a cruise missile strike on the airfield in retaliation - the first direct USA attack on the Syrian regime.

"It appears that they took the warning seriously", Mattis told reporters during a trip to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting.

Syria has denied the Trump administration's charge that it may be planning "another chemical weapons attack", which the White House said "will likely result in the mass murder of civilians".

The White House has issued a stern warning to Syrian President Bashar Assad, claiming "potential" evidence that Syria was preparing for another chemical weapons attack.

Iran's Zarif Says US Travel Ban 'Regrettable'
Gabriel was asked about the Gulf Arab's demand to have Qatar's Al Jazeera be shut down. The travel ban "doesn't help, it doesn't increase anybody's security", Zarif said.

The White House disputed this characterization in a statement on Tuesday morning.

In Damascus, Ali Haidar, the Syrian minister for national reconciliation, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying Tuesday that the government did not have chemical weapons and that it would not use any.

Syria's ally Russian Federation also dismissed the White House claim, saying "such threats to Syria's legitimate leaders are unacceptable".

Moreover, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian Federation considered the White House statement a threat against the legitimate leadership of the Syrian government, and marked a continuation of the USA instigating violence against that government. "You've got to really play this thing very carefully and the closer we get, the more complex it gets". I think he's barbaric in many ways.

USA ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley went further in a tweet, saying that Syria's allies, Russian Federation and Iran, would also be blamed for such an attack.

I don't see a healthy Syria with Assad in place. It's always easier, they say, just to take out the airplanes.

The missile strikes were the first time the US purposefully targeted Assad's forces in the conflict's six-year history.
