New Study Reveal: Smartphone Within Reach Diverts Your Focus And Effects Work

Your Smartphone Can Reduce Your Cognitive Capacity: Study New study suggests having your smartphone within reach reduces your brain power – even when it's turned off
Kenny Thornton | 28 June, 2017, 21:29

Researchers from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin initiated two experiments with an effort of measuring cognitive abilities in almost 500 smartphone users.

An experiment was conducted, with 800 individuals and it was seen how effectively they can work when their smartphone is within their reach.

The results showed the participants who had their phones in another room significantly outperformed those with their phones on the desk, and slightly outperformed those who had their phones in a pocket or bag.

A team of researchers from McCombs, led by Assistant Professor Adrian Ward recruited nearly 800 participants to measure if and to what degree the presence of a smartphone nearby can influence a person's ability to solve tasks - even when the devices aren't in use.

"Your conscious mind isn't thinking about your smartphone, but that process-the process of requiring yourself to not think about something-uses up some of your limited cognitive resources", Ward said in a press release. Assistant Professor Adrian Ward, who coauthored the study, said it was a "brain drain".

- People who were asked to leave their phones in the other room performed significantly better than those with their smartphones on the desk on in their pockets.

Regardless of where their phone was, all participants were instructed to turn their phones to silent.

NYC subways restored a day after derailment
Emergency service personnel work at the scene of a subway derailment, Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in the Harlem neighborhood of NY . About 800 passengers were stuck in the rest of the train and three other trains after the crash caused a power outage.

The study, although nugatory compared to others experiments, brings further confidence into the notion that smartphones are really just making people less intelligent.

The second experiment found those who rely heavily on their phone just to make it through the day were affected more heavily, but only when the phone was in their bag or on their desk. "It's a brain drain".

Participants in all three groups self-reported thoughts about their smartphones at the same frequency.

I am not a fan of cellphones, smartphones, indeed, any electronic devices, because they contribute so often to distracted driving.

In one 2015 study, for example, 40 iPhone users were asked to complete two word search puzzles. The study notes that any anxiety from separation can be mitigated through expectations.

The scientists found that the mere presence of your smartphone, even if it's off, can reduce brain power. Rather than springing a forced separation from a smartphone on a person, if they know the separation is coming they can better focus on the task at hand.

It even found that phones can even distract users even when they are turned off and placed face down. So next time you're having trouble concentrating on something, maybe the solution is to put your smartphone in another room.
