NSA-linked tools used in new large-scale cyber attack

Hackers strike across Europe, sparking widespread disruption New cyberattack wallops Europe; spreads more slowly in US

Computers across the world have been struck by a major ransomware cyberattack, with Ukrainian companies among the worst hit.

"IT systems in several WPP companies have been affected by a suspected cyber attack", WPP said on its Twitter account. However, creating a "perfc" file does not stop the ransomware from spreading, so other computers on the same network can still become infected by the vaccinated computer.

Even law firm DLA Piper's Australian office was forced to a halt on Wednesday morning as it dealt with "a serious global cyber incident".

According to the sources, this attack had a worldwide impact.

The attacks' modus operandi is similar to the recent spate of WannaCry ransomware attacks, CSA and GovTech added.

The Moscow-based cybersecurity firm Group IB estimated that about 100 companies and organizations have been hit by the virus.

"The latest ransomware attacks are demonstrating just how vulnerable critical infrastructure is by hitting railways, airports, hospitals and more". Some security firms are calling the new menace GoldenEye, describing it as a variation of the Petya family of ransomware that targets Windows PCs. Hacking tools presumably belonging to the United States National Security Agency (NSA) and exposed by WikiLeaks were used in a new large-scale cyber attack on Tuesday, CNN reported. It is continuing to investigate.

NYC subways restored a day after derailment
Emergency service personnel work at the scene of a subway derailment, Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in the Harlem neighborhood of NY . About 800 passengers were stuck in the rest of the train and three other trains after the crash caused a power outage.

Top global businesses headquartered in Europe and the USA have come under attack. "We stand ready to support any requests for assistance". This means that there is no longer any way for people who decide to pay the ransom to contact the attacker for a decryption key to unlock their computer.

The powerful ransomware code named "Eternal Blue" has impacted many central banks and large corporations in Europe.

After WannaCry, another ransomware attack is wreaking havoc across the world. In a Facebook post, MEDoc confirmed that it has hacked but denied responsibility for originating the attack.

Ukraine Deputy Prime Minister Pavlo Rozenko tweeted an image of a government computer affected by the virus.

Employees of Reckitt Benckiser have reportedly been sent home as the company's system was hit by cyber attack.

Though it's too soon to be certain, experts say it seems as though a confluence of factors may be pointing to Russian state involvement in carrying out the attack. Its Microsoft Windows systems were temporarily disconnected, and radiation monitoring in the area of the industrial site is being carried out manually, it said.

According to John Miller, Senior Manager, Analysis, FireEye, Petya does not encrypt individual files on victims' systems, but instead overwrites the master boot record (MBR) and encrypts the master file table (MFT), which renders the system inoperable until the ransom has been paid.
