Obama-Loving, Trump-Hating Swedes Turn Their Backs on US

Kenny Thornton | 28 June, 2017, 22:29

The world has more confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin than in his United States counterpart Donald Trump, says a poll carried out by the US-based Pew Research Center among 40,000 respondents in 37 countries on all five continents.

The figure compares with 64 per cent who expressed confidence in Barack Obama at the end of his presidency. Only 22% of Canadians have expressed their confidence in the ability of the new president, to manage the global issues, while they were 83 % have confidence in president Barack Obama about it in 2016.

Although he has only been in office a few months, Donald Trump's presidency has had a major impact on how the world sees the United States.

Globally, 75 per cent of respondents described Mr Trump as "arrogant", 65 per cent as "intolerant" and 62 per cent as "dangerous".

Some of the sharpest declines in trust in the U.S. president came among America's closest allies and neighbors.

The survey, conducted before Trump officially announced that the USA would pull out of the Paris climate-change accord, found widespread opposition (71 percent) to the US withdrawing from global climate-change agreements. Domestic polls had registered a severe dip in Germans' trust of the USA as a partner months ago.

In contrast, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is regarded as competent with a median of 42 per cent of people expressing confidence in her.

Trump's favorability ratings were lowest in Mexico, at only 5 percent, at 7 percent.

The Government Still Uses Floppy Disks - Trump Wants To Change That
Most recently, the industry leaders condemned the president's decision to withdraw the US from an global climate agreement. A number of interesting things were shared at the first meeting of the American Technology Council on Tuesday.

In terms of personal traits, more than half of the more than 40,000 people surveyed by Pew see the USA president as a strong leader.

Meanwhile, respondents showed a decidedly negative attitude to some of the President's flagship policies, including building a wall along the US-Mexico border, which 76 per cent of those surveyed opposed (not surprisingly, 94 per cent of people in Mexico were against it).

Most respondents - 58 percent - held favorable opinions the American people.

"The drop in favorability ratings for the United States is widespread", Pew said.

Trump being sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on January 20th, 2017.

Not all the findings were bad news for the US, however. But neither of them have ratings worse than Trump where 74 percent of the respondents across the 37 countries do not have confidence.

"About a third globally express support for Trump's proposed ban on people entering the USA from certain Muslim-majority nations, although there are four countries - Hungary, Israel, Poland and Russian Federation - where more than half endorse this proposal", the study found.
