Qatar Airways named 2017 Airline of the Year

Turkish Airlines named best airline in southern Europe for 9th year in a row Norwegian Once Again Named the 'World's Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline' and the 'Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe'

Qatar Airways has submitted a filing under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act (HSR) with respect to its potential investment in American Airlines common stock (more than an $81m investment requires DoJ approval, typically 30-day process). Hawaiian Airlines down 14 spots to No. 86 and American Eagle down three to No. 87.

The U.S. airlines accuse Qatar, Emirates and Etihad Airways of receiving massive subsidies from the governments that own them, in violation of so-called open-skies aviation treaties.

Qatar Airways said in a statement that it sees a "strong investment opportunity" in American and that it "intends to build a passive position in the company with no involvement in management, operations or governance".

In a letter to staff, American chief executive Doug Parker described the Qatar plan as puzzling at best and concerning at worst.

U.S. stocks were flat early Thursday as oil prices stabilized while airlines got a boost on news that Qatar Airways is seeking a stake in American Airlines. Most of the states involved have closed off their airspace to Qatar Airways and have stopped flights in and out of the country.

Foreign ownership of USA airlines is restricted at 24.9 percent of voting shares under federal law.

OR communities receiving almost $20 million in rural assistance funding
Despite having nearly 1.5 million acres of federal lands, the less populated Rio Blanco County will receive about $553,000. Nationwide, a record $464.6 million will be distributed to 1,900 local government entities.

They accused Qatar of supporting and funding "terrorism" and working with regional rival Iran - charges Doha vehemently denies.

"[The proposed investment] does not alter American Airlines' conviction on the need to enforce the open-skies agreements with the United Arab Emirates and the nation of Qatar and ensure fair competition with Gulf carriers", says American in the filing.

Qatar Airways made its intentions clear in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The prestigious awards received in Paris today mark yet another busy year for Qatar Airways as the airline looks ahead to no less than 24 new destinations to be launched, new aircraft deliveries, the roll-out of the revolutionary Qsuite across the fleet and continued celebrations of the 20th year anniversary.

Shares of American Airlines rose more than 1% in recent action to $48.99.

Qatar Airways added its investment in the company will not exceed 4.75% without consent from American Airlines' board. Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, called it "asymmetric financial warfare". Qatar also announced it would take a 49 percent stake in Meridiana, Italy's second-biggest carrier, and it bought 10 percent of Chile's Latam Airlines Group for $608 million.
