Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince: The man who will be king

A royal order published by state news agency SPA on Wednesday, and which accompanied the announcement of Prince Mohammed bin Salman's promotion to the post of crown prince, took the further step of restoring the allowances retroactively back to September.

The move wasn't totally unanticipated as a possibility, but has far-reaching consequences. In what would be yet another huge departure from past practices, I would put my money on King Salman relinquishing the throne to his son in the next year or two, assuming all goes reasonably well in the interim. He had, however, been reported intermittently to be in very poor health. Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani also congratulated the new crown prince, expressing hopes for "brotherly relations between the two brotherly countries".

Iran also reviles bin Salman for his leading role in the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is supporting its internationally-recognized government and Iran is backing the Shi'ite Houthi rebels.

The king called on governors and other princes to pledge allegiance to his new heir and ordered a ceremony - routine on such occasions - after night prayers on Wednesday at a royal palace in Mecca.

Ozcan Tikit noted that these changes are expected to contribute to the weakening of religious, as well as a number of economic organizations in Saudi Arabia.

Despite having nearly 1.5 million acres of federal lands, the less populated Rio Blanco County will receive about $553,000. Nationwide, a record $464.6 million will be distributed to 1,900 local government entities.

The reshuffle sparked speculation on Twitter about a possible future abdication by the octogenarian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in favour of his son, whose youth and dynamism have appealed to younger Saudis who make up the majority in society and are often eager for change.

Back then, the royal decree said that King Abdullah informed the Allegiance Council and made a decision to appoint Prince Nayef as the crown prince, deputy premier and minister of interior.

Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran - already running high - could worsen with King Salman's designation of his aggressive and ambitious son, Muhammad bin Salman, as the next ruler, analysts say. Saudi Arabia has typically been ruled by kings in their 70s or 80s. And it came as Saudi Arabia was already grappling with low oil prices, and intensifying hostilities both with Iran and in its own circle of Sunni Arab states.

"The president and the crown prince committed to close cooperation to advance our shared goals of security, stability, and prosperity across the Middle East and beyond", the White House said in a statement about their telephone talks. "There is no question as to who is going to be in charge", he said.
