Senate punts, then 3 new Republicans oppose health care bill

Kenny Thornton | 28 June, 2017, 14:52

"The American people elected us to do that - and we're working hard to get there".

That is a tough pill for moderate Republicans, who will be under enormous pressure from their constituents to vote against the bill.

SUSAN DAVIS, BYLINE: Hey, Ari.

Among those Republican senators who said they could not support the bill in its current form were Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowsi of Alaska.

The Congressional Budget Office on Monday predicted that 22 million people will lose coverage if the Senate bill becomes law. Republicans met today in their weekly lunch. Instead, the new plan is to come up with some deals and secure the 50 votes needed for passage in July.

McConnell's challenge is somehow uniting opposite wings of his party. For every concession you make to one senator, you might lose another. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) "I don't know how, or if, we can get there". As an outspoken opponent of the piece of legislation that could result in up to 22 million Americans losing their insurance by 2026, Senator Bernie Sanders called the health care vote delay a major, albeit temporary victory on Tuesday.

"There's several things we've put on the table". Moderates say they can't vote for a bill that would see the number of uninsured Americans balloon to pre-Obamacare levels.

Sitting immediately to the left of Trump was Maine Sen. So this is the needle that McConnell has to thread. Three Republican senators said they would vote against the motion to begin debate before it even hit the Senate floor. However, this week White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel also were reportedly present.

Following the election of Donald Trump, questions were raised over the future of Obamacare, which the former host of "The Apprentice" vowed to repeal and replace during the 2016 presidential election. On the other hand, the plan they're offering is very unpopular with the general public. Congress leaves Washington next week for a July 4 recess, and talks will continue during the break. House Republicans weathered a similar beating and rallied to pass their version, so it is much too early to write a political epitaph. They fear that failing to do this would completely demoralize their base, would - could potentially derail their entire legislative agenda. Since the 2016 elections, Republicans gained control of the presidency, the House and the Senate.

"If we don't get it done, it's just going to be something that we're not going to like and that's OK. And if they can't be addressed, I won't".

But, this isn't the end of the line for the Republican bill. It's getting increasingly theatrical and dramatic up here. Among her concerns: the need for more money to combat the nation's opioid epidemic and the proposed Medicaid reductions, The New York Times reported. Activists tomorrow night are planning a human chain around the Capitol.

Republicans hold a 52-seat majority in the Senate.
