In his first telephone conversation with the new Irish prime minister, President Donald Trump told the Irish leader that he knows numerous Irish in America and he feels like he knows all of them.

The call is set to come in around 4pm today.

The call comes as the POTUS has been given the green light to introduce his travel ban.

Mr Trump said: "We have so many people from Ireland in this country".

The ban has been reinstated until autumn.

"I pledge as Taoiseach to use my office, for as long as I hold it, to advance the cause of LGBT rights, to press for marriage equality across Ireland, to speak up for LGBT rights around the world where they are under attack, and to push for the implementation of the sexual health strategy here at home at a time when it is more important than ever", he said.

"But I just wanted to congratulate you; that was a great victory that you had". "That was a great victory that you had", Trump said.

The pair also discussed migration, Brexit and the movement of goods and citizens across the border, climate change, free trade, Irish inward investment in the United States and the undocumented Irish, or illegal Irish immigrants, in the US.

They also discussed the North's peace process.

During the exchange, Mr. Trump said that there was Irish press in the White House and called over RTÉ's Washington Correspondent, Caitríona Perry, to say hello to the taoiseach. During the call, reporters from the Irish media were present.

The call took place at 11.15 a.m.in Washington, 4.15 p.m.in Dublin.

Varadkar, 38, is Ireland's youngest prime minister.

According to reports the pair spoke for fifteen minutes and discussed issues ranging from Brexit to climate change.

After Mr Kenny extended the initial invitation, Mr Varadkar said he was not sure "what objective it would serve".

Mr. Varadkar said that he will raise issues such as climate change, LGBT rights, and immigrant rights on a future USA visit.

"I will not, of course, rescind that invitation".

Mr. Varadkar will have his chance next March and before then if President Trump visits Ireland.
