United States top court to consider reviving New Jersey sports betting law

On the day their third-casino bill became law, southeastern Connecticut's casino-owning Indian tribes also welcomed news Tuesday that the U.S. Supreme Court had agreed to hear cases this fall that could lead to the legalization of sports gambling throughout the United States.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the New Jersey law previous year, ruling that the law violated the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 that forbids state-authorized sports gambling.

Sports gambling is allowed in Nevada and three other states that already had approved some form of wagering before the federal PASPA law went into effect.

"I applaud the Supreme Court for taking on this case and potentially resolving a long history of hypocrisy and unfairness in federal law", Pallone said. This is where the state of New Jersey addresses why it should win the case, which is expected to reference the preferential treatment given to the four exempt states. Aside from straight betting on games, Fantasy Sports is what's helping to keep it the most popular US sport.

Speaking on a sports radio show this month, Christie criticized the federal government for restricting sports betting while simultaneously allowing states to legalize recreational marijuana even though it's illegal under federal law. Though the USA professional sports leagues have opposed New Jersey in court, a number of them have shown an evolution of thought on sports gambling.

New Jersey challenges the constitutionality of the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which prohibits states from, among other things, "licensing, or authorizing by law or compact", gambling on sporting events. Under the current Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, such wagers are allowed only in the state of Nevada. The NCAA and National Football League remain opposed to expanding legal sports betting, and the NHL has mostly remained quiet on the prospect in recent years.

Confirmation that the court will hear Christie's appeal comes despite officials in the Trump administration previously urging justices not to hear the case.

Freeman sidestepped the issue of whether Congress has the bandwidth for a sports betting debate and said a court decision could increase the chance of Congress holding hearings on issue, which is something the gaming association has been preparing for. "I am encouraged by it", according to a statement made by Christie at a press conference.

The NFL and the other sports organizations sued New Jersey and Gov. Chris Christie in 2012, after the Legislature passed a law adhering to voters' wishes.

"It's a business that we're in, and I think the state should be looking at it very carefully", Taylor said Tuesday in an interview. "But at least we're in the game, and that's what we want to be".
