President Donald Trump has accepted French President Emmanuel Macron's invitation to visit and plans to travel to France to celebrate Bastille Day on July 14 at an event that will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the USA entry into World War I to fight alongside France and other allies.

This year, the event will mark "the 100th anniversary of the U.S. joining the war with French troops in World War I", an official in Macron's office said.

Trump will attend the traditional July 14 military parade where American troops will march alongside French soldiers to commemorate the centenary of the United States entry into World War I, the offices of both leaders said.

The two leaders will "further build on the strong counter-terrorism cooperation and economic partnership between the two countries", the White House added.

The two leaders met for the first time during Trump's overseas trip in May, just weeks after Macron's election victory.

Macron responded by making a statement in English where he invited USA scientists to France to carry out research "to make the planet great again", hijacking Trump's campaign slogan.

They also shared an awkward exchange at a May NATO conference where Macron gave Trump a "white-knuckle" handshake, which he called a "moment of truth".

Macron issued the invitation on Tuesday in a telephone call with Trump, in which they talked about their meeting during the G-20 summit in Germany on July 7 and 8, and also discussed the threat of a new chemical weapons attack by Syria.

Khan, a Muslim who was criticised by Trump over his handling of this month s London Bridge terror attack, said "many British people disagree with many of Donald Trump s policies" and the visit should be scrapped.
