Mother Claims Son's Fidget Spinner Burst Into Flames

Fidget Spinner Fidget Spinners Catch Fire in Alabama, Michigan
Frank Williams | 30 June, 2017, 17:40

Kimberly Allums told WBRC that her son "noticed that it burst into flames and he just started screaming". The only problem? When a toy has to plug in to be charged up, there's also a chance it can catch fire. "I was downstairs and all I heard was, 'fire, fire.' The fidget spinner wasn't smoking, it was in flames".

Two reports, one out of Fenton, Michigan and the other from Gardendale, Alabama, are warning of Bluetooth-enabled spinners that caught fire while charging for only a short amount of time. Hoverboards, Galaxy Note 7s, and BMWs are all going up in flames, and you can now add fidget spinners - not things that should have batteries in the first place! - to that list.

"We were about five or 10 minutes from leaving the house for the day". When she tried to identify the manufacturer of the faulty spinner, the mother only found the words "Made in China" on the box it came in. Now this phenomenon has visited the latest craze: fidget spinners with electronic parts that can be activated by smartphone Bluetooth, built-in speakers for phone music, and require charging for longer spinning.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has now launched an investigation into the two incidents of exploding fidget spinners, in addition to an investigation into the toys being choking hazards.

"Anytime, you have anything that needs to be charged, we really need to be paying attention to the manufactures of these, doing our research", she said.

The Morning Brief: Travel Ban, Syria and Russell Westbrook‬
District Court Judge Derrick Watson in Honolulu after a federal judge in Seattle issued a nationwide injunction against the plan. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that struck down the revised travel ban .

Because of the fidget spinner's wild popularity, there has been a growing concern among activists that some of the toys have been cheaply made and unsafe to quickly match demand, according to CBS News.

Carr told the local TV station that there were no instructions on how to charge the device, so she used a cord that she normally uses for her baby monitor.

"I personally won't buy another one because of the fear of it", she continued.

Allums said the spinner had been charging for less than 45 minutes. With the speed that toys become popular and mass-produced these days, it's increasingly the case that the batteries inside don't have numerous necessary safety features.
