Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for those attacks.

Somalia-based al-Shabaab militants on Saturday morning killed nine villagers in Kenya's Poromoko village located in the Lamu county along the coast.

A senior police officer who spoke to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity said that additional police forces had been deployed to the area. "They were slaughtered like chickens, using knives", said the witness.

He was speaking hours after the unexpected death of Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery, who had led the fight against al-Shabaab.

Jima is about two kilometres from Pandanguo where the militants attacked a police station and killed three police officers earlier this week.

Canadian men's soccer team playing first competitive game under new coach
This is the teams' second meeting of this calendar year; they tied 1-1 in a Hexagonal qualifier in Panama City in March. The Gold Cup can struggle to gain traction amid a crowded soccer schedule, particularly in the year before a World Cup.

In recent months the group also has increased attacks in Kenya with homemade bombs, killing at least 46 in Lamu and Mandera counties.

In Somalia, al-Shabab militants have been pushed out of all major urban strongholds and ports, but they continue to stage attacks on targets in smaller, more remote areas.

The increase in attacks presents a big problem for Kenya's security agencies ahead of the August 8 presidential election, said Andrew Franklin, a security analyst and former United States Marine.

The al-Shabab group has vowed retribution on Kenya for deploying troops in 2011 to Somalia to help its fragile central government curb the terror group, which a year ago became the deadliest terrorist organization in Africa. They have intensified attacks in Kenya since Kenya sent troops into Somalia.
