Another study, conducted in America, measured coffee consumption across multiple races.

"Importantly, these results were similar across all of the 10 European countries, with variable coffee drinking habits and customs", Murphy added. Other avenues of research to explore could include intervention studies, looking at the effect of coffee drinking on health outcomes. But now, two new studies, including one of the largest of its kind, suggest drinking more java can help you live longer.

"We can not say drinking coffee will prolong your life, but we see an association", author Veronica W. Setiawan, of USC, said in a statement.

"Given these very diverse populations, all these people have different lifestyles".

"Although this study does not show causation or point to what chemicals in coffee may have this elixir effect", Setiawan says, "it is clear that coffee can be incorporated into a healthy diet and lifestyle".

It was only last year that the World Health Organisation revised its warnings against coffee and affirmed that coffee reduces the risk for liver and uterine cancer, after 25 years of labeling it a carcinogen. They saw a reduced risk of early death by diseases related to the digestive and circulatory systems.

Despite the positive results, there were also cases of increased risk for coffee drinkers: According to the study, women who drank more coffee also had an increased risk of ovarian cancer, even though one or both sexes had lower mortality rates for other cancers, like liver and lung.

"We found that higher coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of death from any cause, and specifically for circulatory diseases, and digestive diseases", said lead author Dr. Marc Gunter of the IARC.

Coffee is a complex mixture of compounds, some of which have been revealed in laboratories to have biological effects, Gunter said.

None of those studies prove coffee, per se, provides the benefit.

Professor Elio Riboli, head of the School of Public Health at Imperial, who established the EPIC study, said: "These findings add to a growing body of evidence which indicates that drinking coffee not only is safe, but it may actually have a protective health effect for people".

Both studies separated smokers from nonsmokers, since smoking is known to reduce lifespan and is linked to various deceases. They found that decaffeinated coffee had a similar effect. "It didn't matter whether you smoked or not".

There are also potential downsides to coffee, noted Guallar, a professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

"I love coffee! I drink coffee way too much", she said.

"I think it's a unsafe proposition because it suggests that a smoker can counteract the effects of smoking by drinking coffee, which is borderline insane".

Drinking three cups of coffee a day could extend your life, research suggests.

"So until we figure out how it works, you can keep drinking coffee and stay off the expensive anti-oxidants from the pharmacy", he said. "This, along with the consistency of the results with other studies in the USA and Japan, gives us greater confidence that coffee may have beneficial health effects". Their higher mortality rate could be a result of them being less healthy to begin with.

If you ever felt that you needed coffee to survive, you may be on to something. And if you're not?

"I think for some people, it's going to put their minds at ease", said Lichtenstein, who wasn't involved with either of the new studies.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has more on coffee and health. The people of Denmark, it was found, boast the highest level of coffee consumption by volume, at 900 mL (30 oz) per person per day, while the Italians consumed the least at around 92 mL (3.04 oz). This is important, they say, because coffee consumption and preparations vary greatly from country to country.
