China trading more with North Korea but buying less coal

Though Trump took a more conciliatory tone on the North Korea issue and China's role at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China generally blames the United States and South Korea for worsening tension with their military exercises.

"As neighbours, China and North Korea maintain normal business and trade exchanges", he said, adding that goods for ordinary people and those used for humanitarian reasons are not subject to sanctions. The sanctions are meant to apply meaningful pressure on a government which is all but single-handedly propping up a regime that threatens South Korea, Japan, and the United States with nuclear destruction.

But Beijing, as it has in the past, largely resisted Trump's demands.

The new data reflects China's attempt to pull off a delicate balancing act between the US and North Korea, where it wants to prevent the regime collapsing because it worries about what that would mean for regional stability.

China is nervous about a nuclear armed North Korea.

China insisted yesterday that it was abiding by United Nations sanctions on North Korea despite a jump in its trade with the nuclear-armed nation that comes amid growing U.S. calls for Beijing to rein in its neighbor.

Trump acknowledged as much at a July 12 press availability held aboard Air Force One on the way to France to celebrate Bastille Day.

Its Foreign Ministry has urged a halt to what it called the "China responsibility theory" with respect to North Korea, declaring all parties needed to pull their weight.

But the Trump administration's patience grew even thinner last week after Pyongyang conducted its first successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile believed to be capable of striking the U.S. "They've had numerous wars with Korea".

Diplomats told Reuters that Beijing has not been fully enforcing existing worldwide sanctions on its neighbour.

However Chinese officials have previously expressed their disdain for North Korea's provocative actions.

"Make no mistake, the Security Council's sanctions on [North Korea] can not be equated with all-encompassing economic sanctions".

Yesterday tensions flared as China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said it was not his country's responsibility to deal with the communist state.
