The parents of Charlie Gard are returning to court in their quest to win permission for their ailing son to travel to the United States for an experimental medical treatment.

Dr Hirano told the court there was between an 11 and 56 per cent chance that the treatment could help Charlie's muscular strength and a "small but significant" chance it could improve brain function.

On Friday, High Court Judge Nicholas Francis said he will wait to hear what United States neurologist Dr. Michio Hirano has to say about Charlie's condition before ruling, Fox News reports.

The UK High Court agreed to rehear Gard's case when two global hospitals came forward with new evidence supporting the idea that nucleoside bypass therapy would not simply prolong Gard's life, but actually help him.

"One would have expected that Great Ormond Street Hospital would have said something to the effect [of] 'we welcome this new cutting-edge technology and we'll do everything to come alongside the parents to help them, '" Mahoney said. Other children with the same condition have greatly improved after receiving therapy that's unavailable to Charlie in the UK.

Charlie's parents said they were anxious publicity might put pressure on Dr Hirano.

Roku set for IPO

The 11-month-old boy suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease that has left him brain-damaged and unable to breathe unaided. The disease causes progressive muscle weakness and can cause death in the first year of life.

In a submission to the High Court on Thursday, the hospital's attorney, Katie Gollop, wrote that while the institution understands that Chris Gard and Connie Yates believe they alone have the right to decide the treatment for their son Charlie, the hospital holds different principles.

Charlie's parents are challenging the view of Britain's most famous children's hospital, arguing that treatment overseas is in the best interest of the 11-month-old suffering from a rare genetic condition. The parents have raised £1.3 million via crowdfunding to pay for the trip. The hospital believes his life support systems should be turned off. Britain's High Court agreed, saying that the experimental therapy could cause suffering and would only prolong the process of dying.

The parents of the terminally-ill British baby Charlie Gard have returned to London's High Court to continue a hearing over whether they are allowed to take their son to the USA for medical treatment.

The hospital's specialists have argued that life support for Charlie should be withdrawn. Charlie's parents today condemned this and urged those making the threats to stop.

"To defend human life, above all when it is wounded by illness, is a duty of love that God entrusts to all".
