Twelve people have been hospitalized and one has died from the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

The CDC notes that illnesses reported after June 23 might not yet be included in the total count, as it takes an average of two to four weeks for illnesses to be linked to the outbreak.

In the summer, we're all excited about eating more fruits and veggies, but watch out for one type in particular: Maradol papayas. It causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever that can manifest anywhere between six hours and three days after exposure to the bacteria. The most vulnerable people are children under five, adults over 65, and anyone with a compromised immune system, according to the CDC.

However, those who develop severe diarrhea may need to be hospitalized. The death involved a person from New York City.

According to the CDC report, the ages of the infected ranged from infants through 95 year old, with a median age of 27.

The FDA warns that "Maradol papayas are green before they ripen and turn yellow, so consumers should not eat CaribeƱa brand regardless of the color".

Not Released

The papayas have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 47 people in 12 states.

"When in doubt, don't eat, sell, or serve them and throw them out".

Samples collected from these infected people and the grocery store (left unnamed) were reported to test positive for Salmonella Kiambu and Salmonella Thompson.

CDC officials said they are collecting more information to see if the Salmonella Thompson illness from Maryland is part of the multistate outbreak. The papayas are imported from Mexico and were distributed by Grande Produce in San Juan, Texas.

According to the CDC about 1.2 million people are infected with salmonella in the U.S. each year.
