Taoiseach Leo Varadkar set for first official Northern Ireland visit

Daniel Mulhall said many of a record 500,000 applications in the first half of 2017 had come from British people who fear losing their rights to live and work in the European Union after withdrawal.

The figures were revealed ahead of the Irish Taoiseach warning Brexit will affect "every single aspect of life in Northern Ireland", in his first speech north of the border.

He will give a speech at Queen's University that will also focus on the peace process and strengthening the common travel area.

As part of his two-day visit Mr Varadkar will also meet political leaders, including Arlene Foster of the Democratic Unionist Party, with whom he has crossed swords in the past week.

"The three key issues are citizens' rights, the financial settlement and issues relating to Ireland".

Last week, Varadkar spoke strongly on Ireland's position on Brexit, saying that "we're not going to help the United Kingdom come up with a border solution".

A now-fit Vernon Philander , who has caused enough troubles to Jennings, will be back to pose problems. Home favourite James Anderson is to have the pavilion end at Old Trafford named after him.

He will describe the European Council meeting as "historic" for Ireland and stress how he hopes progress will have been made.

"We need the executive, the assembly, the North South Ministerial Council and the British Irish Council up and running and acting in the interests of our peoples - we need that more than ever, and we need it now". The Fine Gael leader said it was up to the British government to propose solutions to the border issue, as it was "Britain who made a decision to leave" the EU.

He suggested: "As far as this Government is concerned there shouldn't be an economic border, we don't want one".

Relations between the Irish Government and the DUP, the region's biggest party, remain strained after Mr Varadkar said Ireland would not help Britain design an economic border for Brexiteers.

With the Taoiseach taking a harder line on Brexit than his predecessor Arlene Foster said he needs to accept Brexit is going to happen and that he's being unhelpful.
