Muktar Edris defeats Mo Farah to win Gold Medal for Ethiopia in Men's 5000m
12 August, 2017, 23:54
The four-time Olympic champion ran a valiant race in his final appearance on the track at a major championship but could not quite catch Ethiopia's Muktar Edris.
Just as five years ago when he completed the first of his two Olympic distance doubles on the second Saturday of the programme to deafening acclaim in the same stadium, a 55,000 crowd roared on the home hero.
He has raced sparingly outdoors this year, taking victories over 3000m in Kingston and London and over 5000m in Eugene and 10,000m in Ostrava.
Farah normally takes charge on the final lap but this time, following a tactical affair, he found himself playing catch-up over the final 400m as Edris and his fellow Ethopian Yomif Kejelcha led the way.
"I gave it my all, I had nothing left", he said.
Farah did a little boxer's routine as he took to the line psyching himself up for another bruising battle like the 10,000m where he was spiked and nearly elbowed off the track.
Farah was less than a second back in 13:33.22, the Kenyan-born America Paul Chelimo winning bronze in 13:33.30. It's not an excuse, but it took a lot more out of me than I realised.
"They worked as a team, the better man won".
Farah - who immediately went to his family as he has made a habit of doing - said he had had an extraordinary ride in the past six years.
Johnson-Thompson tried to tap into the wave of emotion for Farah making her final attempt after the 5,000 race had started, but despite her efforts could not clear the bar.
The British runner, 34, added a silver to the gold he won in the 10,000 metres at the London Stadium last week. He won the 5,000 and 10,000 meters double at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, as well as the 2013 and 2015 World Championships.
For Farah, there will be no comeback on the track, as he now moves up the marathon looking to extend his gold medal haul.
