Shortly after, Trumka specifically cited Trump's comments in a statement saying that he and Lee "cannot sit on a council for a President who tolerates bigotry and domestic terrorism" and they "must resign on behalf of America's working people, who reject all notion of legitimacy of these bigoted groups".

The chief executives for Merck, Under Armour and Intel and now the president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing have resigned from the informal panel. The group, which Trump established in January with about two dozen members, is supposed to meet occasionally to offer the president advice on job growth.

Leaving the council would no doubt invite the fury of Trump, and potentially damage the inroads the organization has made with the administration on manufacturing and infrastructure.

He also blustered in a tweet on Tuesday that "For every CEO that drops out of the Manufacturing Council, I have many to take their place".

Trump has hit back at the executives who left, claiming others would join the council.

The aftermath of the violence at a neo-Nazi and white nationalist rally represents the latest break between Trump, who sold himself as a businessman president, and leaders of corporate America.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump said the media is downplaying the role of the "alt-left", and said blame for what unfolded at the white supremacist rally in Virginia lies with "both sides".

By the middle of August, at least four of the CEOs on Trump's American Manufacturing Council would announce their decision to resign from the advisory board. He said on Twitter it was "the right thing for me to do".

On Saturday, Trump said the hatred, bigotry and violence in Charlottesville needs to end on "many sides".

President Donald Trump is losing a fifth member of his manufacturing jobs council: AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka.

In a tweet earlier on Monday, Krzanich called out Trump for dancing around any mention of white supremacists or neo-nazis in his first statements on the violence this weekend. But it added that chairman Jeff Immelt would stay on the council because it was important for GE to "participate in the discussion on how to drive growth and productivity in the U.S".

These executives took an important stand and did so knowing that Mr. Trump might lash out at them as he did with Mr. Frazier, who is one of the few black chief executives of Fortune 500 companies.

"I resigned to call attention to the serious harm our divided political climate is causing to critical issues", Krzacnich said in his statement.

Plank said on Monday night that Under Armour "engages in innovation and sports, not politics".
