Binge-watching before bed can mess up your sleep

If you've ever pushed back your bedtime to watch "just one more" episode of Orange Is the New Black, or lay in bed wide-eyed after streaming three exhilarating hours of Game of Thrones, this new research probably won't surprise you.
The researchers determined that the average binge-watching session lasts around three hours and 8 minutes, with roughly 80 percent of study participants saying they binge-watched a show in the past month and seven percent saying they had done so almost every day.
Researchers from the University of Leuven in Belgium discovered how binge watching led to insomnia, fatigue, and a generally poorer sleep quality among younger adults.
Ultimately researchers hope to find out even more about the relationship between technology and people's sleep patterns, as digital habits continue to be on the rise.
Results show that more than 80% of young adults identified themselves as a binge-watcher, with 20.2% of them binge-watching at least a few times a week in the previous month. Binge-watching was defined as "watching multiple consecutive episodes of the same television show in one sitting on a screen, be it a television, laptop, computer or tablet". This might cause an increase in obesity rates among younger people, which leads to many other serious consequences.
Those who identified as a binge-watcher reported more fatigue, more symptoms of insomnia, poorer sleep quality and greater alertness prior to going to sleep.
The study had 423 participants aged between 18 and 25. Sixty-two per cent of participants were women, and 74 per cent were students. They also answered questions about their sleep quality and how exhausted or alert they felt throughout the day.
But why is binge watching so bad for sleep? 71% of those binge-watching declared that they did not intend to, but the show was too good. This should help them calm down and gradually improve their sleep quality.
