Big Test: State Health Chief Goes to Court in Flint Water Case

Switching Flint's source of drinking water from the Detroit River to the Flint River caused lead poisoning in thousands of children Michigan Health Chief Faces Key Hearing In Flint Water Case

Back then, she was drinking and bathing in the water pumped to her home by the city of Flint.

"This represents a couple hundred fewer children born that otherwise would have been", Slusky told Kansas University Today.

And previous year, when she had her water tested, lead concentrations of 1,100 parts per billion were found.

Comparing Flint to other large MI cities helped mitigate for other factors that might affect birth rates, such as couples holding off on having children after the economic recession beginning in fall 2008, Slusky said.

Also, Google data mentioned in their study showed that searches by Flint residents for "lead" and "lead poisoning" didn't increase until September 2015.

The study looked at women of childbearing age and the number of births to calculate each city's birth rates. If people were anxious about it, it could influence their behavior related to deciding to have children, he said.

Instead, they found a 58 percent increase in deaths.

Slusky's research found that sexual activity did not decline during the period of time between the water switch and the risky lead levels becoming public knowledge over a year later.

We have to look at a very competitive marketplace, we have to understand that we have the resources to absolutely be competitive. But the level of financial concern in the NU system is "much worse than we anticipated" a year ago, Green told the audience.

According to the American Time Use Survey, the researchers also found that Flint residents did not report any less sexual activity during this period.

Other supporting evidence they found included a higher ratio of girls born in Flint during this time, because there is evidence male fetuses are more fragile, he said. He explained that other cities' fertility rates stayed consistent, but Flint's "fell off a cliff".

"It's a awful yet inadvertently well-set-up regular analysis", Slusky said in a meeting. The number of new cases faded after the city's water system was switched off the Flint River. The researchers found a five percent decline in average birth weight of babies born in Flint compared with other MI children after accounting for potential selection effects where lead caused the mothers with the smallest fetuses to miscarry or have stillbirths.

Research from both Slusky and Grossman also revealed "that the sex ratio of babies born in Flint skewed slightly more female following the water change", and "Babies born in Flint were also almost 150 grams lighter than in other areas, were born a half-week earlier and gained 5 grams per week less than babies in other areas examined over the time period".

The implications of the Flint environmental crisis provide wide-ranging lessons for cities and states, Slusky said.

Taylormatthias Wilson-Williams, two months old in this Getty picture, was conceived in 2015 when his mother, Tiantha Williams was exposed to lead in Flint's water. "Gasoline is nondurable, so it was much easier to stop putting it in gasoline", Slusky said.

"Flint was a government failure - enough people have been indicted that there's a reasonable consensus around that", he said.
