BYU will now sell caffeinated beverages on campus Mormon-church owned BYU reverses six-decade ban on selling caffeinated drinks

Soda lovers of Utah, rejoice: after decades of serving caffeine-free sodas, Brigham Young University said Thursday, Sept. 21, that it will now offer caffeinated Coca-Cola Co.

BYU Dining Services adds Coke to a soda fountain in the Wilkinson Center (Josh Ellis).

The Provo school announced it was making the change Thursday after receiving more requests from students to serve caffeinated soda.

A 2012 "Getting it Right" posting on the church's website explained "the Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine". The faith's health code, known as the Word of Wisdom, specifically forbids coffee, tea, tobacco, alcohol and "any other drinks or food containing harmful substances", according to the Church's official site, but whether the more ambiguous category includes anything caffeinated has always been a source of debate.

In the mid 1950s, the director of BYU food services stopped the sale of caffeinated soft drinks and the policy has been in place ever since. However, BYU's Dining Services said it will not be selling highly-caffeinated energy drinks. Caffeinated sodas will still not be sold at the two satellite campuses in Jerusalem and Salt Lake City. The university consistently resisted calls for a caffeinated campus, insisting its consumers did not want it.

"Yes, the Administrative Vice President has been supportive and has kept the President's Council informed", the university said.

At the time, a BYU spokeswoman stated that the rest of the school "has simply chosen not to sell caffeinated beverages on campus".

According to Wright, the decision "was not based on financial considerations", but on student demand.
