The former President of Pakistan, Gen (retd) Parvez Musharaf has accused Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairman Asif Ali Zardari of being the one behind the assassination of Benazir and Murtaza Bhutto.

In a video released in media on Thursday (today), Musharraf blamed PPP co-chairman and Benazir Bhutto's widower Asif Ali Zardari for the former PM and her brother Murtaza Bhutto's murder.

Giving his "reply", he said he is especially addressing [Benazir and Zardari's children] Bilawal, Aseefa and Bakhtawar, as well as the Bhutto family and all Sindhis and Pakistanis who have been following "this murderer of Benazir".

The video was released nearly a fortnight after an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan had declared former military ruler Pervez Musharraf a fugitive in ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto's assassination.

Musharraf alleged that Asif Zardari had murdered Benazir at the hands of Baitullah Mehsud.

The two senior police officers who were sentenced to 17 years in prison for security lapses that led to the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007, have also challenged the judgement against them in the Rawalpindi bench of Lahore High Court (LHC). "Naheed Khan [Benazir Bhutto's political secretary], PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Faheem and security in-charge Khalid Shehenshah were all in the auto but the court never even summoned these people to record their statements", he said. The accusation comes just days after Zardari and the PPP accused Musharraf of masterminding the murder.

The former president also hinted at the role of Afghan intelligence agency Khad and then president Hamid Karzai in facilitating the assassination with Zardari. "I lost a lot from Benazir's assassination while Zardari benefitted", he said. Musharraf asked. "The only reason was that he himself was the killer", the retired general said. He also questioned the change in Benazir's return route and Malik's dashing to Islamabad right after the incident.

Mr. Zardari went on to become the President after her death from 2008-2013 and took over the reign of PPP. "Only one person is capable of [plotting the assassination], and that person is Asif Ali Zardari".

Moreover, Musharraf asked why people sitting with Benazir inside her vehicle - Naheed Khan, Safdar Abbasi, Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Zardari's "jail buddy" Khalid Shahenshah - were not questioned by the court. He also urged BB's children Bilawal, Aseefa and Bakhtawar to pay heed to what he is saying about their father's involvement in the killings.

"Zardari was in power for five years, why did he not look into the case, why was the investigation not active - because he was involved in Benazir's murder".

Former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack after an election rally in Liaquat Bagh on Dec 27, 2007.
