London students can now pay for groceries using just their finger vein pattern thanks to a "world-first" payment system at a Costcutter at Brunel University.

An electronic reader maps the user's finger veins, generating a unique key.

The installation at Brunel's campus convenience store follows a separate pilot of Fingopay at a London music venue in January 2017, where more than 2,000 concert goers were registered into the system.

According to Nick Dryden, chief executive of Sthaler, the system would appeal to young people. Visitors pair a debit or credit card with their vein profile once and only need to use their finger to pay for purchses thereafter.

Almost two thirds of Brits want to be able to use a biometric scan to authorise payments in-store, according to a WorldPay survey. The technology is also said to even work with wet, dirty or surface level damage, like cuts, as the finger scanner sees inside your skin.

Now, in London, Sthaler says that it expects 3,000 students to have signed up for the system by this November - enthusiasm was kickstarted with an offer of £5 in credit for the first 1,000 registrants - and that it's in talks to bring FingoPay to other United Kingdom supermarkets and to gyms and even nightclubs for membership verification.

Wayne Swallow, retail sales director of Sthaler, said: "Fingopay will give the Brunel Costcutter valuable customer data, enabling personalised real-time promotions and, at the same time, speed up service by offering customers the ultimate in convenient payment". They don't need to remember a pin number.

Sthaler says its method is "the safest form of biometrics with no known breaches".

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on how much of a sadist you are, the new system that doesn't draw blood from your finger to verify your identity. People can use the fingerprint scanners on their phones but these can be...
