Int'l Cricket Council's New Rules Include Smaller Bats, Player Sendoffs

ICC new rules Cricket will change from 28 September All you need to know about ICC's new rules

It has been decided that there will be no more top-up of reviews in a Test match after 80 overs in an innings.

Changes to on-field indiscipline, the governing of umpire referrals and bat sizes will all come into force from Thursday when the Proteas host Bangladesh in Potchefstroom, live on Sky Sports, and Sri Lanka travel to play Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. In March, the Marylebone Cricket Club had confirmed a new Code of Laws, the first since 2000, and the ICC has incorporated the relevant clauses in their playing conditions. Those offences include assaulting or threatening to assault another player, an umpire, the match referee or a spectator, or any act of violence on the field of play. DRS allowed in T20Is as well, with one unsuccessful review per team per innings. Edges can not be more than 40 mm, while the overall depth will be restricted to maximum of 67 mm. Umpires will be issued with a new bat gauge, which they can use to check a bat's legality.

However, to compensate for this, the ICC has decided that unsuccessful reviews in the event of the decision remaining unchanged due to "umpire's call" will no longer count as an unsuccessful review.

Players can now be sent off for the rest of the match for "any serious misconduct", to be dealt under Level 4 offenses whereas any misconduct falling under 1-3 levels of offenses will be dealt under the ICC Code of Conduct.

Now a review will not be wasted in case an "umpire's call" on a leg-before-wicket (lbw) decision is upheld following review.

If a batsman is running or diving towards the crease with a forward momentum with his/her bat grounded behind the popping crease but loses contact with the ground at the time of the wickets being disturbed, will be considered to be not out.

The same rule applies to a batsman trying to regain ground in an attempt to avoid being stumped.

Also, batsman can now be given out, stumped or run out if the ball bounces off a helmet being worn by a fielder or wicket-keeper.

New catching rule has been introduced in which the airborne fielders will have to start from within the boundary before touching the ball in any way, and if the fielder fails to do so the runs will be awarded to the batting side.

This rule is for the catches taken on the boundary. Previously he couldn't be caught off a wicketkeeper's or fielder's helmet.

Tethered Bails The bails can now be tethered to the stumps, restricting how far they fly off the stumps. A batsman can not take strike so far outside the crease that he/she is standing in the protected area of the pitch, just like bowlers are not allowed to follow through on the protected area.
