Swallowed Playmobil traffic cone 'in man's lung for 40 years'

Man forced to undergo surgery after X-Ray finds Playmobil cone in his lung Swallowed Playmobil traffic cone 'in man's lung for 40 years'

A 47-year-old man was thought to have cancer when he was consistently coughing up yellow phlem for over a year.

X-rays showed something nasty on his lungs and as the chap had recently had pneumonia and was a smoker a diagnosis of cancer followed.

The BBC did not disclose whether the cone - now apparently shellacked in cigarette tar - was part of a larger playset or if the man's entire birthday present was a single Playmobil cone.

A bronchoscopy was carried out to help doctors diagnose his condition.

Tracheobronchial foreign body (TFB) is more common in children than it is in adults.

The report added that doctors writing for online medical repository BMJ Case Reports now consider him a medical mystery, due to the length of time that passed without him displaying any symptoms.

However, after further tests, it was discovered that the dark mass was not a tumour, in fact, it was a plastic toy traffic cone that had lodged itself in the man's lung.

Chelsea much better with Alvaro Morata over Diego Costa - Glenn Hoddle
A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea Football Club has today agreed terms with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa". And Morata is someone who is good in the air, but he has not got that nasty character and streak that Costa has got.

After doctors successfully removed the object, it was identified as a plastic Playmobil traffic cone, according to the report of the case.

Once the traffic cone was removed, the patient later admitted to being an inveterate Playmobil-chewer as a child.

Luckily, removing the traffic cone appears to have done the trick.

The doctors said: "On a positive note, his symptoms improved markedly and he finally found his long-lost Playmobil traffic cone in the very last place he would look".

"However, a case in which the onset of symptoms occurs so long after initial aspiration is unheard of in the literature". Although the toy may have caused some obstruction in the airway, it may not have caused any symptoms, he explained.

It's possible that, because the patient was so young when he inhaled the cone, his airway was able to adapt around it, absorbing it into the mucosal lining.
