NRA, Congress And White House Gang Up On Bump Stocks

Vegas-gunfire-suggests-automatic Here's what the NRA thinks about regulations on gun bump stocks

The National Rifle Association is calling for additional regulation on bump stock devices, which are used to make a gun fire like a fully automatic one, after a gunman used the device to open fire on a crowd of 22,000 people in Las Vegas.

Congress worked to pass a weapons bill in 2013, but it was stopped by Republicans.

While the bill now is without Republican support, some GOP lawmakers, including House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), have said they would be willing to consider such legislation. "But we really need to stop and think: Is this going to have the impact that we want?"

Those are attachments that go on semi-automatic firearms that would make them function as an automatic weapon. "That was approved by the ATF in 2010 and 2012, so why would we defend that?"

However, ATF has already concluded bump stocks do not violate current law, and given its blessing to manufacturers of the devices. The bill has since garnered 26 Democratic co-sponsors.

On Thursday, the NRA's executive vice president Wayne LaPierre and its executive director Chris Cox released a joint statement saying that bump fire stocks, a gun accessory that can essentially turn semi-automatic weapons into rapid-fire machine guns, should be regulated.

The National Rifle Association (NRA), the powerful pro-gun lobby that threw $21 million behind Donald Trump's presidential candidacy previous year, weighed in on the debate for the first time today, calling on the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to review the matter, rather than create new laws. The devices enable semi-automatic rifles to mimic automatic weapons, allowing more rapid fire. "Ban manufacturing or possession of accessories that accelerate a semi-automatic rifle to that of an automatic".

GOP Members Of Congress Ask ATF To Reevaluate Bump Stocks
On Thursday the powerful gun lobby called on regulators to determine whether the bump-stock devices comply with federal law. That includes requiring stricter background checks for anyone wanting to buy a semi-automatic rifle.

Authorities say that, based on the amount of weapons found at the crime scene, they assume Paddock had to have help. "I think it's premature to be discussing legislative solutions, if there are any".

"Clearly that's something we need to look into", Mr Ryan told a United States radio programme, adding that many lawmakers had not been aware until now that such devices existed. Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo said he would introduce a bipartisan bill as soon as today that would call for a total ban.

During an interview during on KFGO's "Afternoons Live", Franken said the devices should be prohibited.

Travis Brunson, owner of Guns on 41, said a ban seems likely after what happened in Las Vegas.

The comments from lawmakers including No. 2 Senate Republican John Cornyn of Texas mark a surprising departure from the GOP's general antipathy to gun regulations of any kind.

But White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Thursday that she welcomed the NRA's latest statement, adding that the administration is "certainly open to having that conversation".
