On guns, Trump is very much a normal Republican

Republican-led bill on bump stocks expected to be introduced Thursday in House GOP signals openness to gun control legislation

Democrats and some Republicans say they want to discuss a federal law that would ban the manufacture, possession or sale of "bump stocks", an add-on device that can effectively turn a semi-automatic rifle into a weapon that fires as fast as a fully automatic gun. But Thursday afternoon the NRA finally released a statement from Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox, the NRA's top lobbyist.

Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin), the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said Thursday that he would likely support some kind of action against bump stocks. How about making it more hard to get a gun, and forget about selling gun silencers for the NRA. The gun rights group said just before Sanders spoke that it supported a review of bump stocks, and suggested they should be subject to additional regulation.

Said the NRA: "Banning guns from law-abiding Americans based on the criminal act of a madman will do nothing to prevent future attacks".

Lawmakers around the country are making similar statements about restricting the device.

Why bump stocks, which are created to let a shooter fire more rounds in less time, are legal is a question that the Senate will soon consider after Sen.

Another Republican, Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC, said it would be a "good time" to have a hearing and he suggested he would consider looking at bump stocks.

"We welcome, certainly, that and conversation on that", she said. "We won't talk about that", Trump said inside a Las Vegas trauma center, where he'd met with doctors and nurses who tended to victims.

Republican Representatives Paul Ryan, Robert Goodlatte, Carlos Curbelo, Mark Meadows and Bill Flores have all called for investigations into the devices, too.

On Wednesday, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Republican leader, said he's open to considering new limits on bump stocks and called for a hearing. Sen.

Starting at 10:08 p.m. Sunday, Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, fired hundreds of rounds from his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas.

Those comments from GOP lawmakers came a few hours after a group of Democratic Senators unveiled a bill that would ban the bump stocks.

"The National Rifle Association is calling on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law", the NRA said in a statement.

"I'm shocked that there weren't more people that died", Brandenburg said. She did not say which firearms were used in the shooting.

But, Feinstein said, "for one reason or another", her daughter and neighbors decided not to make the trip from San Francisco.

The Las Vegas massacre may have shaken Congress out of decades of gridlock around gun control.

The National Rifle Association is endorsing tighter restrictions on bump stocks.

"When you called, I was on the phone with a welder, one of my regular customers, who had tears in his eyes", Brandenburg said. "My concern really more now than before is we're seeing this happen on a regular basis and we keep thinking well we need to have another law".
